Customer Reviews
Bought this because it was cheaper then most of the other Ice Cream makers in its class. Was worried when I bought it, as it did not have any reviews, but took a chance. I have now had it for several week and have been pleasantly surprised. I have made sherberts, sorbets, Ice creams and even vegan ice creams, and have had absolutely no problems and the results are so much better then what you get from a store. I highly recommend this machine.
I wanted an ice cream maker with a refrigerated a built-in compressor. About a year ago, I purchased the Cuisinart ICE-50 ice cream maker. Besides being difficult to work with, the motor burned out in a year. The plastic top would pop up when the ice cream was thickening, requiring me to put a heavy book on top. The motor, when it worked, was noisy.
I reviewed other refrigerated ice cream makers. The DeLonghi ice cream maker had a noisy motor, that eventually burned out according to reviews. The paddle would often break. One reviewer said she had to purchase extra paddles so she would have a replacement on hand. The Lello Junior had many of the same problems: a noisy motor that eventually burned out. I ordered and later returned the Whynter SNO Ice Cream Maker after reading reviews. This ice cream maker was also reviewed by Cooks Illustrated; however, they only tested two refrigerated ice cream makers. The motor was noisy. Turning on the machine required patience since you had to place the bowl just right for the paddle to turn. I almost gave up, but I wanted to try the NewAir AIC 220 Commercial Ice Cream maker.
The New Air AIC 220 ice cream maker is the best in the market at the $200+ range. The motor is detachable and it set on top of the clear plastic cover. All the other ice cream makers had the motor enclosed in the housing. If the motor burned out, you would have to mail it in for repairs. The NewAir AIC 220 only requires a replacement of the motor attachment. The motor is very QUIET. The housing is stainless steel. The control panel is easy to use. The digital window tells you the time you have left AND the temperature. The temperature gets down to -31 degrees. The only downside to this ice cream maker is that the motor does not automatically shut off when the mixture gets thicker while freezing. After 45 minutes, you need to make sure that the motor does not get overheated.
NewAir's warranty is a one year replacement warranty. You can purchase another year for about $20. None of the other manufacturers had warranties of this type. To me, that means that NewAir has confidence in their product. I had never heard of NewAir before purchasing their ice cream maker. They principally manufacture ice makers for businesses. I also want to point out that I called their customer service representatives and they were nice, helpful and friendly. How often does that happen in real life?
Like all the other refrigerated units, the final ice cream product is soft serve. That's fine. I got tired of having to freeze a bowl overnight so I can make ice cream the next day. To me, that was a pain. But, the final product for the ice cream makers with the freezer bowl are also soft serve. The Cuisinart model costs only $80. So, it you don't mind freezing the bowl overnight, the Cuisinart is obviously the better value.
Anybody reading my review has no idea who I am or if I know what I'm talking about. That being said, if you want a compressed refrigerated ice cream maker, this is the one to purchase. I took the word of the only other person who purchased the ice crea maker on Amazon. I'm glad I took the reviewer's advice.
